This is a study program that prepares prospective general practitioners through education in basic and clinical medical sciences. After completing the S1 bachelor's degree plus professional program (a total of approximately 5.5 years), you are still required to undertake an internship of approximately 1 year before you can practice independently as a doctor.

You study basic medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry) through to clinical sciences (internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology) to diagnose and treat patients. The early phase is theory- and laboratory-based; the later phase involves clinical rotations at a teaching hospital.

Education levels

how does it differ from other levels?
Spesialis (PPDS)
An advanced professional program taken after earning the dr. degree. It focuses on a specific clinical area — surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and dozens of other specialties. It takes 4–6 years depending on the field and awards a specialist degree (Sp.B, Sp.PD, Sp.OG, etc.). Tuition is much higher than the S1 bachelor's, and admission is competitive.
S2 Ilmu Kedokteran
An academic/research program, not clinical training. It focuses on specific medical research (epidemiology, clinical pharmacology, medical education, etc.) and takes ~2 years. It awards the M.Kes. degree. It suits doctors who want a career in research or academia rather than pure clinical practice.
S3 Ilmu Kedokteran
A doctoral research program. It focuses on in-depth research and a dissertation, taking ~3–4 years. It awards the Dr. (Doctor) degree. It is suited for high-level academic careers (professor) or leading research teams at health institutions.

what's the difference?
vsPendidikan Dokter Gigi
Focuses on oral and dental health rather than the whole body. Graduates become dentists (drg.), not general practitioners (dr.).
vsFarmasi
Focuses on medications, formulation, and the pharmaceutical industry. Graduates become pharmacists — they do not diagnose or clinically treat patients.
vsKeperawatan
Focuses on patient care and nursing management. Graduates become nurses, with a different scope of authority and responsibility than doctors.
vsKebidanan
Specifically focuses on maternal health, childbirth, and newborns. The scope is narrower than general medicine.
vsBiologi
The basic science of life, without clinical training. There are no hospital rotations or medical practice rights.

Myth vs Fact

MYTH All doctors are wealthy and earn high salaries.
FACT A fresh graduate general practitioner earns around Rp 6–10 million/month. High income takes years to build through specialization or establishing a private practice.
MYTH Medical graduates can immediately practice as doctors.
FACT After graduating from the S1 bachelor's and professional programs, you must complete a ~1-year internship to obtain an STR (Surat Tanda Registrasi, Registration Certificate) before you can practice independently.
MYTH Medical school is just about memorization.
FACT It also requires clinical skills (manual dexterity, observation), patient communication, and diagnostic problem-solving in real-world situations.
MYTH Specialists are automatically more successful than general practitioners.
FACT Specialists do earn more, but they need an additional 4–6 years of education. General practitioners also have viable career paths, especially in regions with a shortage of medical professionals.

Facility Checklist

Questions specific to Medicine to bring to an open house or campus visit. Important facilities vary by program — these matter most.

Does the campus have its own teaching hospital (RS Pendidikan)?
Is there an anatomy lab with dissection practicum facilities?
Is there an OSCE Center (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) for clinical exams?
Are the biochemistry and physiology labs fully equipped for basic practicums?
Are there clinical simulation facilities (patient simulator/standardized patient)?
Does the library provide access to international medical journals (PubMed, UpToDate)?
What types of hospitals are used for clinical rotations (koas), and are they accredited?
What is the ratio of students to beds in the teaching hospital (ideal standard ≤2:1)?
Are there adequate microbiology and anatomical pathology labs?
Also ask: are the diagnostic support facilities (clinical lab, radiology) at the teaching hospital fully equipped?

Tip: ask for a tour of the relevant labs/studios, not just the main building. Ask about access hours and whether undergrads can use the equipment.

Program accreditation status

Check the program's own accreditation rating (not just the campus's) on official sites. International accreditation is a plus for certain fields.

Check at: BAN-PT (banpt.or.id) or the relevant LAM, & PDDIKTI (pddikti.kemdikbud.go.id).

Student–faculty ratio & how to calculate it

ratio = active students ÷ full-time faculty
Example: 600 students ÷ 25 faculty = 1 : 24
Ideal: ≈1:20 for STEM/science fields, ≈1:30 for social sciences/humanities (per Ministry of Education guidance).
!The smaller the second number, the more attention each student gets. Above 1:40 is worth flagging.
!Also check faculty qualifications (Master's/PhD) and whether there are industry practitioner lecturers.

Look up faculty profiles and publications (Google Scholar / SINTA). For Medicine, look for those researching currently relevant topics:

Teaching hospital (RS Pendidikan)
What type of hospital hosts the clinical clerkship? Does it have the highest accreditation (paripurna)? How many specialty clinics and surgical facilities are available?
Clinical rotation partner hospitals
Besides the main teaching hospital, what other hospitals serve as clinical rotation sites? Are there any Type A national referral hospitals?
Community health centers (Puskesmas) for community practice
Which community health centers (Puskesmas) are partners for the Community Medicine rotation? Are they spread across both urban and rural areas?
Health research institutions
Is there research collaboration with BRIN, Litbangkes, or international research institutions? Can students get involved in the research?
Professional organizations (IDI)
Does the campus have an active relationship with the IDI (Indonesian Medical Association) for professional networking and continuing medical education?
